Auditory adaptation: hearing the same voice every day makes your brain habituate to it. Without any real growth, that familiarity can be mistaken for "I've improved," and conversely, real growth into a new range can feel unfamiliar enough to register as "I'm not sure I've gotten any better."

Metric 3: Max phonation time (MPT)
MPT (Maximum Phonation Time) measures, in seconds, how long you can sustain a single note on one exhale. This number reflects diaphragmatic breath support, vocal fold closure efficiency, and airflow control all at once.
How to measure it: take a deep breath and sustain an 'ah' vowel for as long as possible in a comfortable mid-range. Don't force it — let the sound end naturally. Record the longest of 3 attempts.
Important caution: if you feel your throat tightening or the sound suddenly turns rough during an MPT test, stop immediately. Forcing the vocal folds shut to block airflow can cause excessive vocal fold pressure.
Safety note: stop an MPT measurement if your face flushes or your throat starts to hurt. A healthy long tone is sustained by breath support, not force.
Metric 4: Register transition stability — passaggio breaks

Sing the same phrase deliberately soft and then deliberately loud, record both, and compare peak volume.
